Is Salt an Important Piece of Nutrition For Pregnancy?
Nutrition for pregnancy health and vitality really amounts to eating the best diet. For pregnancy, this means diet and nutrition during pregnancy need to be understood. A bit of knowledge goes a long way, and unfortunately your healthcare provider is not always the best source.
Breaking the Salt Myth for Pregnant Women
At one time, a whole host of pregnancy ills was attributed to salt and its detrimental effects on diet and nutrition during pregnancy. Current research, however, has proven these claims false.
Low levels of salt exacerbate feelings of fatigue common during pregnancy, especially during the first and third trimesters. Salt has also been favorably linked to pre-eclampsia. Current clinical studies have proven that eating salt in adequate amounts may actually prevent this deadly disease.
Sadly, the myth that salt should be banished from the best Diet For Pregnancy persists. Well-intentioned obstetricians continue to limit salt intake as part of a healthy Diet In Pregnancy.
Salt vs. Sodium
The approval of salt for consumption is a bit of a double-edged blade. Salt is an important nutrient. Sodium is not. All too often the two are thought of as interchangeable. Sodium is not a homonym for salt.
Sodium is one of the elements which combine to create salt. In minute amounts, sodium is actually healthy for the body. Consumption of sodium on a very large scale is a contributing factor to many diseases, one of the most significant being heart disease.
Many of the foods which contain high levels of sodium are also poor sources of nutrition for pregnancy. A healthy diet in pregnancy should not include copious amounts of potato chips, canned and processed foods or pretzels in the name of getting enough salt. All these foods are empty calories and huge doses of sodium.
Getting Enough Salt for the Pregnant Woman
There is no complicated equation or recommended serving amount applied to salt and nutrition for pregnancy. This makes getting enough of it one of the simplest dietary needs ever.
Pregnant women still need to watch out for hidden sources of salt and sodium to ensure they are feeding themselves and their babies only the very best. As a rule, foods that are pre-packaged or processed contain much larger amounts of unhealthy sodium than their home cooked counterparts do.
Pregnant women should salt their food to taste, and listen to the body. If cravings begin turning toward salty snacks, this is the body’s way of asking for something. Instead of eating a bag of butter and salt laden microwave popcorn, opt for a serving of oven-roasted potatoes salted to suit your taste buds.
Cutting out unhealthy sodium foodstuffs and keeping the saltshaker on hand is a tasty and healthy way to get the salt required for proper nutrition during pregnancy.
