Understanding relationships with inmates in the mind of a pregnant woman.   by Rapidcharry

It’s visit day. The baby and I are on our way to see daddy. Our baby hasn’t arrived yet. I’m five months pregnant. Each Saturday, we wake up at 4am and take the three hour drive. All visitors must be in line by 8am. If you are even five minutes late, your visit is denied. You should see the scene that takes place when that occurs. Some ladies have been denied their visit for wearing the wrong color clothing or clothing too fitted. I always arrive one hour before the cut off time to allow me enough time to fix anything the correctional officers see as a problem. One weekend, I was too exhausted from the work week and stayed home. He was furious. He called me collect cursing and screaming at me. I understood since I’m his only connection to the outside world. I’m staying hopeful that consistent visits, letters and phone calls would help his three years go by faster.

My Counterparts

On visit day, there are other women who look like me. Some have baby bumps stretching out as far as eight months. It makes me wonder how we all got in this predicament. We all seem like we’re bursting full of joy when we see our man. What are we really feeling on the inside? We all write daily letters to men who are no longer able to stimulate us intellectually. We all accept three-dollar-per-minute collect calls. And we are all heavily focused on when he’s getting released, making the importance of this life growing inside us secondary. We all come across wonderful men on the outside of prison but reject them to be loyal to our men in prison.

When he Comes Home

My best friend cautioned me not to be easily persuaded by any promises he make. She said most inmates do not look back once released. They forget about whoever helped them through their sentence once they come home. There are exceptions to this rule where couples live happily ever after. But I’m keeping a mental note that I may not be the exception, just the rule.

Drove Three Hours for Two Hours

We’re half way through the two-hour visit. He rarely asks me about our unborn child. He looked at my belly, but didn’t rub it this time. All he seems to be concerned about is how sexy I look. Still, I love him. Or am I just in love with the investment I put into this relationship? How much thought should I put into men in prison and contracting an STD? There I go again, consuming myself in this prison sentence instead of this baby. Even when I think about Giving Birth, I automatically go into worrying “will they let him come to the hospital to see the baby born?” I have to change the way I think, or else it’ll continue after the baby is born and after he is released. But how can I put my baby first if dad isn’t here to be with us? I didn’t grow up with a father, so I’m holding on to my first chance of having both mom and dad living in the same household. But is the fight worth it? I’m getting exhausted. The bell just went off. Visiting hours has ended. I kissed him and told him we’ll be back in seven days.

If This is You…

I’m sharing my thoughts for all the ladies who are living like me, trying to keep their family together. Our loved ones are constantly reminding us we can do better. Perhaps they are right, but we rather learn this on our own. But what if they are wrong? They don’t know our man like we do. They would never understand. Hang in there and let fate decide how you two will end up.
